A Fresh Start

Happy New Year! I'm hoping that 2016 will be the best year yet for this blog. Full disclosure, it took me three years to figure out how to get logged back into this thing! Yeah, you laugh but trying to tracked down passwords, old cell cellphone numbers and jumping through a host of other hoops just to prove that the account belongs is to you is no joke! So, I've learned my lesson and I'm back on the blog.

Here's what you can look forward to as we move through this new year; new posts on the great work that's happening in some exciting initiatives that I'm privileged to be involved in professionally and personally along with some amazing partners to make a difference in our little corner of the world.

So let's toast to a fresh start, keep checking back for more news and updates.

Mayor Brown Promotes Small Business Saturday in Buffalo

In addition to "Black Friday" and "Cyber Monday," Mayor Byron Brown is reminding holiday shoppers about "Small Business Saturday."

The national movement began a few years ago to support local businesses that create jobs. With several small business owners by his side, Mayor Brown told reporters in Spot Coffee on Hertel Avenue everybody wins by shopping with small businesses.

"You win because you don't have the hassle of shopping at the mall...the person that you're shopping for wins because they get more thoughtful, more heartfelt gifts that probably are more meaningful, and the community wins because that money that you spend in small businesses in the community go back into the community," said Brown.

Brown says for every $100 spent at a small business, $68 come back to the community. At large retailers, he says, just $43 comes back.

So get out there during this shopping season and buy local!
